Reception
The film received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 76% approval rating based on 17 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10.
Frank Lovece of TV Guide gave the film 3½ stars out of 4 stating that “This retelling of THE LION KING (1994) from the point of view of comic sidekicks Timon (voice of Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella) is one of the rare Disney direct-to-video sequels worthy of the original.” He went on to say that ‘the only aspect of the film that feels forced is the revisionist positioning of Timon as young Simba’s step-dad, which has no emotional echo in the first film. The quality of the animation is surprisingly impressive; some static backgrounds are the primary concession to a small-screen budget and the fluid character movements and expressions are vastly superior to those of, say, the Timon and Pumbaa TV cartoon series.'” Joe Leydon of Variety gave the film a positive review, writing “toddlers and preschoolers will be equally enchanted and amused by colorful toon shenanigans.”

General
- Nuka is voiced by Andy Dick.
- Nuka’s name means “smell (bad), stink” in Swahili.
- Since Simba’s Pride is adapted from Romeo & Juliet, Nuka is most likely based on Tybalt in that he is Kovu’s rival in the same way that Tybalt is Romeo’s, and their deaths heighten the tensions in their respective stories.
- Flip Kobler, the co-writer of The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, has stated that Nuka is Scar’s biological son. In another statement, he elaborated that Nuka, Vitani, and Kovu were originally Scar’s children in the shooting script, but when the incest controversy concerning Kiara and Kovu arose, Kovu’s relationship was changed, and he could not speak for Disney concerning Nuka and Vitani’s relationship with Scar. Director Darrell Rooney has stated that Zira’s relationship with Scar was obscured to make her “just a follower,” which would suggest Nuka is unrelated to Scar.
- Nuka is not mentioned or referenced in “Return to the Pride Lands”, nor is he included in the cave paintings that detail what transpired between the Outsiders and the Pride Landers.
In development
- Nuka was originally designed to be heavier in build, but when Andy Dick was cast, his design was changed to fit Dick’s voice characterization.
- The scene where Nuka dies was originally longer. As Nuka lies crushed beneath the logs, Zira cradles his head gently with a paw. Pleased with her affection, Nuka manages to say, “Well, I finally got your attention, didn’t I?” Zira smiles at him as he croaks another, “Didn’t I…?” before he finally dies.

Personality and traits
Rani is strong-willed and dutiful. She is protective of her home, the Tree of Life, as well as her family and friends. She is conscious of her position as the leader of the Night Pride and as queen, rarely showing any weakness to others. She is quite straightforward in speaking her mind and can sound harsh at times.
Rani is respectful of those whom she considers to be equal or superior to her, such as her family and teammates, both of whom she often turns to for advice and is in turn grateful to for their aid. Rani is shown to be very protective of her younger brother Baliyo, but can also be playful with him.
Rani is critical of Kion, displaying her headstrong and temperamental side
While Rani is brave, she on occasion can be temperamental and headstrong when she thinks she is in the right, to the point that she is quick to assume things and refuses to listen to an explanation from the other party. Beneath her strong exterior, she hides a vulnerable side of uncertainty and doubt in herself at the prospect of becoming the next queen, as she feels she’s not ready yet to embrace the title. This is evident after the loss of her grandmother, Janna.
Getting to know Kion and his friends helps Rani find the self-assurance she needs to be queen, as she knows that she has her friends and family at her side. After becoming queen, Rani grows wiser and is quick to adapt to her new title, earning the respect and trust of the animals of the Tree of Life. As Rani’s respect for Kion grows, she becomes more patient, humble, understanding, and less judgmental of others.
Differences from previous releases
- The mix for this version of the soundtrack differs greatly from the older releases. Jay Rifkin had mixed the original version of the soundtrack for the film, but for this release, Hans Zimmer asked Alan Meyerson to remix the score, bringing many previously-unheard elements forward.
- “We Are All Connected” features the insert that uses the Busa theme as it appears in the film.
- “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” has both Nala and Simba singing the line “No one saying ‘See here'” – in the previous releases, only Nala sang it. In addition, it leads in from the previous track, “Hyenas In The Pride Lands”.
- “Hakuna Matata” is longer than the previous album release, as it presents the film version of the song.
- “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” leads in from “Nala, Is It Really You?” and leads out to the next track, “Remember Who You Are”.
- “This Is My Home” features “Hawaiian War Chant” at the end.
- “The Rightful King” includes a previously-unheard chorus singing in Swahili as Simba rises to Pride Rock.

Soundtrack
The film soundtrack, The Lion King 1½: Songs From Timon and Pumbaa’s Hilarious Adventure, was released to CD by Disney Records on February 10, 2004. It includes two songs from the original film, “That’s All I Need” and “Hakuna Matata”, re-performed by Nathan Lane who took over the role of voicing the character, Timon. The rest of the soundtrack includes various R&B tracks, including remakes of the Kool and the Gang classic “Jungle Boogie” by artist French, and two instrumental pieces from composer Don Harper. Ennio Morricone was the original composer of “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly”.

Trivia
- The film reveals the story of Timon’s origin and how he and Pumbaa first met each other and became friends. However, a similar yet different story was originally revealed in the Timon & Pumbaa episode “Once Upon a Timon”. This may indicate that Timon & Pumbaa (or just said episode) and The Lion King 1½ exist in different continuities from each other.
- The French track on the DVD plays (in English) “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” during the end credits instead of “Grazing in the Grass” (performed by Raven) and “That’s All I Need Reprise” (performed by Timon).
- Outside the USA, the sing-along lyrics are omitted, but there is still a ladybug bouncing on the screen, excluding the Arabic version, which has the Arabic lyrics featured with the ladybug bouncing on each word.
- The French track on the DVD plays a cover of Kool & the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie” in place of the original. Unless otherwise noted, all other songs featured in the movie are sung in French.

As an adolescent, Nuka is shown to be an unappreciated bully whose only concern is to be loved and recognized by his mother. He is constantly picking on his siblings. Rejection seems to take a heavy toll on the young lion, making him resentful of his brother for being the chosen one and downgrading of his mother behind her back. Perhaps because his accomplishments go unrecognized, Nuka feels the need to be powerful, taking great pleasure in bullying his younger siblings and boasting about his own capabilities to their faces. However, if he finds himself being cornered, he won’t show any shame in asking his brother for help.
Nuka attacks Simba, reflecting his tenacious and vicious nature
Because of his arrogance, Nuka is irresponsible and detached from his siblings, leaving Kovu to brave the Outlands alone despite the cub being Nuka’s responsibility. Nuka is also shown to be neurotic and easily angered, losing his temper over a simple bout of termite itching. His judgment can understandably be called into question when he grows into a young adult, as he initially accuses Kovu of being a traitor without waiting for his mother’s explanation. His inner motive, to gain his mother’s appreciation and love, often fogs his common sense.
In his final moments, Nuka proves himself to be strong, agile and fast but still unintelligent, impulsive and willing to throw himself into peril for his own selfish gains. Under no instruction from his mother, he pursues Simba alone and attempts to take down the older lion by himself in order to prove to his mother that he can do what Kovu could not. His lack of care for the loose logs he was climbing over results in his ill-planned attempt at gaining Zira’s favor ending in his own demise. Nuka begs his mother to realize just how hard he’d tried to please her just before he dies. What he never realized was that his mother did genuinely love him but never showed it, a realization Zira comes to all too late.
Plot
A young lion named Simba is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of the Pride Lands; however, after Simba’s paternal uncle Scar murders Mufasa, Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. After growing up in the company of the carefree outcasts Timon and Pumbaa, Simba receives valuable perspective from his childhood friend, Nala, and his shaman, Rafiki, before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny and take his place in the Circle of Life as the rightful King. Simba and Nala’s daughter Kiara falls in love with Kovu, a male rogue lion from a banished pride that was once loyal to Scar.
Kion is the son of King Simba and Queen Nala, the younger brother of Kiara and the prince of the Pride Lands. As the second-born of the Lion King, he is gifted with a power called the Roar of the Elders and becomes the leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals who protect the Pride Lands and defend the Circle of Life. Kion, along with his friends Bunga the honey badger, Beshte the hippopotamus, Fuli the cheetah, and Ono the egret, sets out to keep the Pride Lands safe and protected from animals who do not respect the Circle of Life.
Following a threat message of revenge by Scar, the Lion Guard plan to invade the Outlands by uniting the Pride Landers and a clan of hyenas led by Jasiri. In the final invasion, the Pride Landers overpower a huge army of Outlanders, and while in the volcano to stop his great-uncle, Kion gains a scar across his eye via Zira and Ushari. While Scar believes he has won, Kion summons the Great Kings of the Past to pour rain on Scar, dissolving him for good.
After Scar’s defeat, the Lion Guard travels out of the Pride Lands of Africa and across the world to get to the Tree of Life to cure Kion and Ono from their battle injuries. Kion’s team also gets a new member, a martial eagle named Anga, who replaces Ono’s position as the new keenest of sight after Ono lost his eyesight, while Ono gains a new position as the smartest. Separated by Simba’s prejudice against the banished pride and a vindictive plot planned by Kovu’s mother, Zira, Kiara and Kovu struggle to unite their estranged prides and be together.
The Lion Guard returns to the Pride Lands, only to find out that the conflict has already been settled. Zira’s daughter and Kovu’s older sister, Vitani, forms her own Lion Guard in their absence, causing an argument between them and Kion’s Lion Guard. However, after seeing Vitani’s confidence in becoming a leader even without the Roar, Kion allows Vitani’s Lion Guard to succeed his Guard as defenders of Pride Lands. Kion and his friends return to the Tree of Life where Kion marries Rani and is crowned King of the Tree of Life with his close family and friends attending. Several weeks later, Kion and Rani symbolize the new union of the Pride Lands. With the Pride Lands restored to its usual state, Makini presents Kion and Rani’s newborn cub to the assembled animals, continuing the circle of life.

Characters
- Timon (voiced by Nathan Lane), the main protagonist. He is a meerkat who is somewhat self-centered, selfish, and distracted, but he shows strong loyalty and respect towards his friends.
- Pumbaa (voiced by Ernie Sabella), the deuteragonist. He is a warthog who is slow-witted, yet very empathic, and he would be anyone’s friend.
- Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick as an adult and teen and by Matt Weinberg as a cub), the tritagonist. He is a lion who leaves his home at Pride Rock after believing that he killed his father and he becomes Timon and Pumbaa’s close friend.
- Ma (voiced by Julie Kavner), the secondary deuteragonist. She is Timon’s mother who is quite protective and attached to her son, often trying to get him accepted amongst the colony. She sometimes has small arguments with Uncle Max.
- Uncle Max (voiced by Jerry Stiller), the secondary tritagonist. He is Timon’s cranky, old uncle who has an unfriendly relationship with his nephew, but it softens towards the end of the film.
- Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings), the main antagonists. They are a trio of hyenas who serve as Scar’s henchmen.
- Nala (voiced by Moira Kelly) is Simba’s childhood friend as a cub and later, his mate as an adult. She appears very briefly in the movie, and she has an extended conversation with Timon and Pumbaa about Simba’s past.
- Rafiki (voiced by Robert Guillaume) is a wise, old mandrill who, in this movie, teaches Timon about Hakuna Matata.
- Zazu (voiced by Edward Hibbert) is a hornbill who serves as Mufasa’s majordomo.
- Mufasa and Scar make appearances but have no lines. Sarabi has a cameo.
Concepts
Appearance and personality
In early concepts for Nuka, he shared many similarities to Scar. He had the same reddish-brown fur, albeit a bit duskier than Scar’s, and he even had uncolored paws in certain concepts. Based on his facial expressions, Nuka wasn’t originally the comic relief villain he is in the final film.
The earlier “groomed” Nuka concept
His expressions in most of the concepts are deceptive, sneaky, and scheming. His fur, mane, and whiskers are smooth and elegant, unlike the scruffy, unkempt final version.
In another one of his concepts, his groomed look has become more disheveled, but he is still in better shape than the final Nuka. He retains the devious look, though it seems more dopey than the first. In this picture, his mane doesn’t extend down the length of his neck, staying only at his head. This could mean that he was the same age as teenage Simba in the original film. His last two concepts are more reminiscent of the final Nuka. His deviousness has been completely taken away and replaced by stupidity. However, both concepts have Nuka with uncolored paws.
